CHAPTER 12

July 14th

Wednesday Mid-Morning

“You sure you’ll be okay?” Nate asked for the tenth time in as many minutes as we waited in the grocery parking lot.

Huffing, I popped my head up from the hidden compartment in the back of the crash vehicle and looked at him between the front seats.

“Yes, Nathan, I will be fine.”

“You know my full name isn’t Nathan,” he groaned, his head hitting the back of the seat.

“Whatever you say, Nathaniel,” I countered with a snicker when his grumbling only grew louder. “See them yet?”

“No—wait, yeah, I think that’s them coming in now,” he told me, his eyes glued to something outside of the vehicle. I stayed still until I saw a large SUV pull up next to us, only then crawling from my hidey-hole.

Glancing at Nate, a bolt of panic lanced through me at the news that had been shared this morning, knowing once we left this parking lot, things wouldn’t be the same for who knew how long.

“Stay safe and keep me updated on everything. I’ll do some baby shower planning, even if I can’t show up,” I said quietly, low enough only the Aces road captain could hear. We shared a soft but worried smile as I quickly climbed from one car to the other.

“You’re in charge right now, Tank,” Brooks instructed Nate from where he was sitting in the middle set of seats closest to the window. “Let us know if anything happens. Here’s a cell to reach us. I programmed our burner numbers. If something happens, we’ll let you know how to reach us.”

“You got it, Boss. Stay safe,” Nate said with a nod, climbing from their car and walking toward the store to avoid looking out of place.

“Are we leaving now?” Brooks asked, his eyes never leaving the random people coming and go, meandering around the lanes.

For a long moment, I stayed quiet, my mind racing with an idea that popped into my head on the way over. I absently nibbled my lip, finally making a decision, hoping it was the right one.

“I have one stop we need to make,” I revealed, my tone not giving anything away.

“Where?” Garrett asked, turning to look back at me.

“The Solace.”

Silence.

“I’m sorry... what?” Stone asked, breaking the quiet standoff.

“You’ll understand when we get there. Chase, drive,” I commanded, settling in before any of them could question me further. Thankfully, my little assassin trusted me and did as I asked without comment, though I resolutely ignored the glances in the rearview mirror as he drove the large, black SUV through the streets of Reno.

Even after six months, my throat ran dry, and a sliver of fear iced my veins at the sight of the casino and resort that held some of the many horrors of my father and his mob of minions. It didn’t seem to matter that we’d sold it to a trio of rich trust-fund babies so they could run their low-level criminal gambling ring. To me, I knew it would always be tainted, but I shoved away the panic that threatened to choke me and climbed out of the car after the others.
